Lewis's single to avoid (30/01/06)

Jesse McCartney - 'Beautiful Soul'
It's all in the name, really. Jesse McCartney - it conjures up images of the quintessential boy band member; a transparent jock with floppy blonde hair and puppy dog eyes, who has been assured by some snivelling A&R exec that he is destined to follow in the hallowed footsteps of his namesake Paul. Except for that last bit, Jesse is true to form here. This sounds like some godawful synthesis of the Backstreet Boys and Westlife - it's yer average pop-rock with a vague West Coast tint, and is thus completely characterless. The empty references to 'souls' and suchlike are a typically brazen, jock-like attempt to give Jesse's sunshine sound some lyrical depth that it could never attain. This record is like jumping blind into a swimming pool, only to find that there's no water.
